From the author of the popular Coach's Boys series, Kristy K. James, comes a romantic suspense story to keep you on the edge of your seat!
He's hiding out because someone wants him dead....
Cameron Rafferty is keeping secrets. Dangerous secrets that could endanger the lives of everyone around him. His plan was simple...keep a low profile until the would-be killer was found. And it was working - until an accident changed everything. Before he knows it, he finds himself becoming more involved with the family next door, and wishing for things he shouldn't. Things that will put their lives in jeopardy, too.
Her summer plans didn't include secrets and danger....
Spending summers on Bois Blanc Island was a tradition for author Laura Keane and her young son. Filled with special memories of the husband she'd lost to war, she looked forward to days of reminiscing, playing, and working on her newest novel. She didn't expect this year to be any different - but that was before their sexy neighbor came to her rescue like a knight in shining armor. Will that armor be tarnished when she finds out what he is and why he's living next door?
Laying Low in Paradise Casteloria Series Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Kristy K James Katie Welburn Books
The book surprised me with the big secret reveal, so kudos for that, and I thought the romance was sweet and believable. It also had fairly good un-put-down-ability as I read it in two sittings. The writing, however, was a bit uneven, and especially the dialogue involving the kids. Just didn't seem natural most of the time. And Sam was just too good to be true for his age. Yes, he was supposed to be ultra responsible due to his father's untimely death, but no pre-teen boy acts like this.
I also had a problem with the men next door being able to see right into Laura and Sam's place so clearly that they knew exactly what was going on in their house (without the use of binoculars), but Laura and Sam didn't seem to have the same ability to see them watching.
Occasionally there were unnecessary descriptions (like hand washing, etc), and there didn't seem to be enough to do on this beach, so people kept having to get hurt. Laura was there to write, but we see nothing of her writing, which might have been interesting.
Her reaction to Cameron's news seemed over the top and kind of silly, and the prologue was one of the worst written prologues I've ever read (I nearly stopped right there). In trying to be too mysterious, it ended up being just a jumble of nothing we could get a grip on.
As another reviewer stated, the big action we were waiting for happened from the perspectives of people in hiding, so it fell very flat. And while the prologue was too short and confusing, the epilogue was too long and too detailed.
Some of this book really worked, so I hope the author keeps writing and improving.

Laying Low in Paradise Casteloria Series Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Kristy K James Katie Welburn Books Reviews
I didn't really know what to expect from this book, but the description seemed interesting, so I was glad to be a part of the blog tour. The book had a lot of unexpected twists and turns that kept my attention the entire time; I read this book in one sitting. The plot of this book had romance and suspense; I loved every minute of it.
I am surprised this book isn't more popular, because it really is a well written and engaging piece of writing. The main character Laura was very relatable; I love the connection she has with her son (especially in the beginning of the book). Love interest Cameron helped Laura move on from the trials and tribulations of her life. Cameron has a secret though, that I was in no way expecting.
Sam (the son of Laura) and Brendan (the son of Cameron) really kept the laugh factor in this book. I think all of the characters were well developed, and they all added something unique to the story. I do recommend this book, and am very glad I got the chance to read and review it.
*I bought a copy on for my kindle fire, and also got a copy from the author for an honest review.*
I love Kristy's work. I have to say her stories are not what I usually read, no explicit sex scenes, no foul language even in this story with a fair bit of violence it's not in your face gruesome but you still get the point. I love her characters and I especially love the humor. I've called it "snarky" in other reviews but that's not quite right. Her characters laugh at themselves, they use humor to diffuse tense situations, it's not mean they way she does it but it reminds me so much of the humor in our family, that it cracks me up every time.
Especially loved the interaction between the boys having raised 5 kids myself.
So yes there's suspense and a love story but so much more, characters you'll like, humor and people not afraid to laugh at themselves and people who have faced some really tough times but have picked themselves up and kept going until they found true love and happiness again.
This book was wonderful, Laura and her son Sam had to the island for summer, their neighbors unknown to them are in hiding from someone trying to kill them. Cameron and his son Brendan are in hiding after an accident which caused Brendan to lose part of his leg and he's is not a happy person. Laura gets hurt and Cameron his staff help her, over next few days Sam tries to bring Brendan out his room and bad mood it some doing but the boys finally get along, I loved how Laura and Cameron came together, then the suspense starts I was holding my breath reading it I especially loved the scene with the three men who were captured
One of my favorite characters was Sam! His approach to Brendan was insightful while still being a kid. I really hope the series continues to grown up Sam and Brendan’s stories. Laura and Cameron’s story was a fairy tale but with fun twists. I even liked that some of the movies mentioned are favs of mine. And absolutely Nolan and Fin deserve their own stories! Can’t wait!
This one in going into my reread collection. There is some adult content but without crudeness and vulgarity and there is no petting and beyond. You know there are secrets and dangers from the very beginning but when the mystery was revealed I had no clue and was completely surprised. Yet when looking back it all fit. The romance was sweet. The prominent characters clearly defined. You'll go on an emotional roller coaster, maybe a few tears, some laughter, and some gut clenching scenes. There are several editing errors but not to the point of distraction. This one is worth your time.
Laying Low In Paradise was a very good book. I enjoyed the camadarie between all of the character in the story. I also enjoyed that Ms. James showed that Cameron and Laura respected each other to wait until marriage to make love. There was no *f* language which was a big plus in me enjoying reading Laying Low In Paradise. This is a GREAT read for anyone not looking for a story with outrageous sex scenes and bad language throughout the book. Thank you Ms. James for such a great book.
Where do I begin? If you love Suspense, Romance, Broken Hearts, Children, Committed Friends, and HEA, this is the book for you. It is a full story that will keep you up at night. Two Broken Hearts, a little boy that's suffering and another little boy that even though he has lost a parent he's as strong as any child can be. I can't rave enough about this book. I'm hoping to get some rest prior to pickup up "The physician to the King, Book 2..or maybe not. smile
You will not be disappointed.
